Last week saw 4,500 local causes receive a payout from Co-op’s Local Community Fund.
Payout day was celebrated across the nation and, while previous years have had celebrations in stores and cause centres, this year celebrations were enjoyed remotely.
We caught up with one of Honiton’s local causes, the Honiton Carers Support Group.
They are a group which provides an invaluable source of information on the services available to carers in the community and, more importantly, respite within a supportive environment.
People who provide around-the-clock care for a loved one are often doing so without adequate support, both financially and mentally.
Chair of the group, Winnie Cameron, told us about the importance of a group like this and the wonderful things they’ve been able to do with the funding from Co-op Members.
“This funding has been brilliant” Winnie said. “Originally it was going to be spent on arts and crafts materials to use in our group meet ups but due to Covid-19 this just isn’t possible.”
Instead, Winnie told us that the ever-adapting Honiton Carers would spend the funding on art and craft virtual Zoom sessions – with instructors to lead these sessions and kits being delivered to members of the group as Christmas presents.
How does Payout work?
When Co-op Members buy selected Co-op branded products and services, 2p for every pound spent is split between community organisations and local causes.
This soon adds up, because these Co-op Members have helped raise £15 million for 4,500 causes this year.
From supporting projects that improve access to food and mental wellbeing, to education and employment opportunities for young people, the Local Community Fund has never been so vital.
The Honiton Carers Support Group is a fantastic example of one of our local causes that have been helped by the fund.
