The Honiton Hotpennies have done Honiton proud by raising more than £3,500 towards the national Ration Challenge, hosted by Concern UK.

Inspired by local teacher Sammy Smith, who also took the challenge, Honiton hospital radiographer Sue Doran decided to take on the challenge of eating the same rations as a Syrian refugee for a week in order to raise funds to feed refugees during the cold winter months ahead.

She created a team, the Honiton Hotpennies to be able to share milk and spices.

Due to the pandemic it was a virtual team, so the ladies were from all over the country. But the name of Honiton shines out as we were about Team 50 in the leaderboard of over 350 teams.

We smashed our individual targets and raised funds to bring food and medical supplies to many. Sue has spent time working for an NGO in northern Iraq after the first Gulf War, so she has had first hand experience of life in a war zone in a refugee camp.

It was a real eye-opener and the plight of refugees remains at the forefront of her thoughts.

Thanks to many generous local donations from friends and fellow church members at the Honiton Community Church, and also from many friends throughout the UK, the Honiton Hotpennies can say it was a task worth doing!
