Honiton firefighters were called out twice in the space of a few hours - helping to tackle a burning bus near Ottery St Mary and a barn fire in the South Hams.

There were several passengers on board when smoke started coming from the vehicle as it travelled from Exeter to Ottery on Wednesday, August 11.

The driver stopped on the road between Daisymount and Ottery at about 5pm and made sure everyone got off safely.

When firefighters from Ottery, Honiton and Exeter arrived, the bus was engulfed in flames, and the fire completely destroyed the vehicle. The road was closed for a few hours after the incident.

The fire isn't being treated as suspicious and the fire is thought to have started accidentally.

Second call-out to burning barn

Later on Wednesday night, Honiton firefighters were called out again to help deal with a barn on fire, with 100 bales of straw inside, in Stokenham in the South Hams.

Fire crews from the surrounding area were first on the scene, arriving at around 8.25pm, but as the operation to surround the fire and prevent it spreading continued through the night, relief crews from locations including Honiton were brought in.

Firefighters stayed at the scene overnight, monitoring the fire and using compressed air foam to protect nearby buildings.

The incident was still ongoing at 8.00am this morning (Thursday, August 12) with two pumps and compressed air foam jets in use.
