Would you like to see Honiton police station's front desk reopened?

There are plans to get some of the front desks at Devon and Cornwall's police stations opened again, and local people are being urged to speak up if they'd like Honiton's to be one of them.

Devon and Cornwall's Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez wants to reverse the closures of front desks in smaller police stations - but she wants to make sure those that do reopen will be used, to ensure the best use of public money.

In a statement on her website, she says: "Many police station front desks closed before I took office in May 2016 due to a decline in footfall. I have since re-opened Newquay and have plans to re-open Tiverton later this year.

"I believe now is the time with the biggest investment in over a decade in policing to improve access to the police and re-open those front desks that will be used.

"We have all paid more in our council tax and received an uplift from the commitment from Boris Johnson of 20,000 extra police officers. For Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly this equates to 498 extra. Many are in training now (it takes 3 years) or about to be recruited but we've already got 317 recruited so far.

"Which one do you want to see re-open near you? And what would you like to see available? Take my survey and let me know."

The survey is available here. It asks people how far they'd be willing to travel to visit a police station in a non-emergency, what they would use the front desk service for, which days they'd like to see it open, and which methods of contacting the police in a non-emergency they would currently use.

Local councillor Phil Twiss is encouraging Honiton's residents to 'take a couple of minutes to complete the survey as soon as possible'.
