A new community network launched in Honiton to help support residents during the coronavirus pandemic went live with phase one of the roll-out today (March 23).

The Honiton Coronavirus Information Line was opened this morning at 10am, with trained volunteers available to listen to people's concerns and signpost to where help is available. No medical advice will be given.

Numerous key groups and organisations have come together to establish Honiton Coronavirus Community Advice and Support Network to provide not only practical support, but also guidance.

Heather Penwarden, chairman of Honiton Hospital and Community League of Friends, said: "In these unprecedented times we want to assure people in Honiton that the surgery, hospital, community team, community college, The Beehive, St Michael's 55 Centre, Tesco, the FoodBank, councillors, churches, Devon Freewheelers, key voluntary groups and many individuals have had an active input into this plan.

"We will remain working together across the organisations to keep our community informed, advised and hopefully safe."

The network maintains close links with NHS and social care professionals.

TRIP is coordinating shopping and meal deliveries, cooked at St Michael's.

The charity is also spearheading a telephone befriending line and coordinating a network of trusted volunteers to undertake tasks such manning the phone line, checking on neighbours and collecting shopping.

Neil Hurlock, TRIP Manager, said: "In these uncertain times it heartening to hear about the amazing community effort.

"Honiton, as a town , should be proud.

"Heather Penwarden has worked tirelessly to co-ordinate the local charities and support groups, under the banner of 'Honiton Coronavirus Support Group'.

"The hope is that, as a collective of trusted charities and organisations, we can help the people of Honiton and reduce the pressure on the statutory agencies where possible."
