East Devon will see 70 oak trees planted this year to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, when she will commemorate 70 years on the throne.

This landmark and historic event is being celebrated across the UK. It is the first time any British monarch has been Head of State for so long.

The government have announced a special four-day Bank Holiday weekend, starting on Thursday June 2 and ending on Sunday June 5.

Honiton has a range of activities planned, including special meals, music and a family fun run.

East Devon District Council is marking the event by gifting oak saplings and a commemorative plaque to every town and parish. It is hoped planting will begin next month.

Oak trees and renowned for their longevity and strength and they have a unique place in the UK's national landscape. It is hoped the trees will serve as a long term and important reminder of EDDC's carbon neutral and environment priorities.

The council is working with local councillors and parishes to find suitable locations for the trees where they can be enjoyed by residents.

Chair of East Devon District Council Councillor Ian Thomas, said: "After two years of difficulty and challenge, we now have an opportunity to boost the wellbeing of all in East Devon, our communities, businesses, and the residents we serve, in an enjoyable and effective way.

"Our EDDC ward members will be pleased to help ensure we all enjoy a fantastic and unique Queen's Platinum Jubilee Year, which leaves a valuable legacy for East Devon and our communities."
