Honiton veteran successfully completes 70-mile charity run

Honiton veteran Chris Wakeling has completed a 70-mile charity run to raise money for the British Legion and the Devon Air Ambulance.

He dedicated the run to his late brother, Mark.

Setting off from Bruv's Bar at 9pm on Friday, Chris completed three laps of a circular route that included Honiton, Combe Raleigh, Dunkeswell and Ottery St. Mary.

He ran through the night and completed the event on Saturday afternoon in Honiton, where he was cheered on by friends and family.

Chris said: "The last five miles were soul destroying. It just never ended."

"Going up into Dunkeswell, it was drizzly for most of the night. With the headlight on, I just couldn't see in front of me."

"I fell over at thirty-four miles: I just didn't see a pothole. I did a roll and then I lay there for about ten seconds waiting to see if my ankle hurt, but it didn't so I got up and carried on."

Chris trained for the run with the support of his wife Natasha and his friends.

The encouragement he'd been given in training inspired him to keep going: "I thought if I didn't do it, it would be such a big let-down."

Asked if he has planning his next fundraising event, Chris explained: "I'm on strict orders from the wife not to organise anything until next year, which is fine by me."

Please visit Chris's website for more information or to donate. Donations for this weekend's run will be accepted until the end of November.
