The team behind a befriending initiative to combat loneliness in the community are excited to reveal their new online service.

It comes after the charity organisation, TRIP Befriending - which is part of TRIP Community Transport - received a grant from Honiton Hospital League of Friends.

The money is paying for internet devices, which will enable isolated members of the community to connect with others.

TRIP Befriending Coordinator, Lorrie Wilson told Nub News: "This new development using technology within our befriending service isn't born solely from coronavirus isolation, although it has accelerated the process.

"Loneliness in the community was a big problem before the crisis hit, however it has been brought to the forefront with a lot more people experiencing the negative impact of not being able to socialise."

The new virtual befriending service will equip isolated and vulnerable members of the community with a device that is connected to the WiFi, which will then be used as a means of communication with one of the 'befriender' volunteers.

TRIP Deputy Manager, Sharon Thorne commented: "We feel very privileged and honoured to have received funding for this project by another incredible charity operating in the town, Honiton Hospital League of Friends.

"We are also extremely grateful to our amazing volunteers, who make everything we do possible.

"Our volunteers span the ages of 12 up to 97 and they are all such a valuable asset to the team; each bringing a different set of skills and experience."

If you want to volunteer or know anyone who will benefit from the befriending service please email [email protected].
