'Wheelbarrow-gate': Honiton shop owner fights for display

By Hannah Corfield 17th Sep 2021

An independent shop located just off Honiton High Street on Northcote Lane is fighting a council decision calling for the removal of an outside display.

Pavot, which was opened last summer by Honiton local Carla Salisbury, sells vintage items and bespoke handmade crafts and knitwear.

During opening hours, Mrs Salisbury sets up a display consisting of a wheelbarrow holding flowers, with a sign on top advertising the shop.

Nub News visited Carla at her shop. She told us: "I'm fighting the council to keep my shop display.

"I've replaced the old wheelbarrow with a new, narrower custom-made piece.

"It's carved out of lovely Elm wood and was made by a local man who was so enraged to find out what was happening to me.

"Many of my customers have said my barrow is an asset to the town, as it's so pretty and they only find the shop because of it.

"Other shop owners have also said they will support me."

A spokesman for Devon County Council said: "We don't like doing this, but when someone's put out a sign or display or anything that blocks the public footpath sufficient that we think it would obstruct wheelchair users or parents with buggies for example, we'll ask the shop owners to kindly remove them.

"We know it's not popular, and the planted-up wheelbarrow display is lovely, but I'm afraid it's an obstruction.

"So we've asked the owner politely to take it in."
