Chemotherapy Care Kits delivered especially for children as part of Honiton women's initiative

The Chemotherapy Care Kits initiative was started at the beginning part of this year by Doreen Hooper, who recently came through her own battle with cancer.

She wanted to give people going through chemotherapy a gift that was both thoughtful and useful; so, while in recovery she used the time to create specially tailored kits for cancer patients at Honiton Hospital.

The scheme relies on donations from members of the public and local businesses, who provide items such as warm socks, a journal and hand sanitiser - which have known benefits for those receiving cancer treatment.

The initiative was so successful that it grew to incorporate other Hospitals and now children are benefiting too.

Doreen Hooper told Honiton Nub News: "Today my husband Geoff and I delivered the first eight children's Chemotherapy Care Kits to the Oncology unit at Wonford.

"Included in these is a small bag of essentials for parents.

"This is a family project as it's on a smaller scale than the adult initiative. Therefore, it is manageable for us.

"We wanted to continue at least part of the initiative in our own right as it's really important to us."
