Business owners in Black Lion Court, just off Honiton High Street, have been busy sprucing up the area during lockdown, in preparation for reopening.

Sally Wilde, who owns bespoke gift shop Planet Sal, along with Jennifer Shepperd of HemPorium and the owner of James' Patisserie and Sandwiches have worked hard painting the gates and pressure-washing the stonework - before bleaching everything as a Covid-19 precaution.

The pièce de résistance though is the paint work on the courts' namesake, the Black Lion feature in the entrance.

Now nicknamed 'Clarence', the beautiful Black Lion has a glossy mane of golden high-lights, along with a shiny shield sporting a Devon heraldic lion.

Speaking to Honiton Nub News, Sally said: "We're really lucky to be located in such a striking little corner of the town, which is steeped in fascinating history.

"While we had the opportunity, myself, Jen and James decided to give the place a makeover.

"We got really into it and ended up spending hours painting and cleaning and it's paid-off seeing it looking fresh and inviting to welcome customers back.

"Only two Black Lion Court Businesses have been able to reopen so far, but the others plan to as soon as possible which will help to attract footfall.

"We have started a hashtag #BrighteningUpHoniton as many of the towns' traders have made improvements during the break.

Talking about the response since reopening, Sally said: "People have been really kind and supportive, which is always the way in a lovely place like Honiton.

"I just hope the weather clears up to encourage people into town for Father's Day cards, as I've already missed out on Easter and Mother's Day."
