Honiton Town Council have resolved to support Honiton in becoming a Fairtrade Town.

A full council meeting will be held tomorrow (Monday 10) where members will discuss a report by Cllr Caroline Kolek, who has outlined five goals that need to be met for Honiton to qualify for this new status.

The five goals are:

  1. Local council to pass a resolution to support Honiton becoming a Fairtrade Town. In doing this, commit to council offices using Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar etc.
  1. At least four Fairtrade product ranges available in at least four local retailers and at least two Fairtrade products served in at least two local cafes/eateries.
  1. Write to local schools and churches asking them to support Fairtrade by buying and serving Fairtrade products.
  1. Inform the press and ensure people are aware of Fairtrade in
Honiton. This also includes Honiton Town Council and Chamber of Commerce websites.

Plan an event for Honiton's Declaration Ceremony, ensuring supporting businesses benefit from the event - advertising, awareness etc.

  1. Set up a local steering group to ensure progress and commitment to Fairtrade. This group will be responsible for the annual assessment to monitor Honiton's continuation in meeting the five goals.

Members of the council have already agreed to start using Fairtrade products in meetings and at events and to encourage staff to use Fairtrade products whilst working.

An effort will also be made to raise awareness of Honiton as a Fairtrade Town by supporting activities and events which promote Fairtrade.

According to Cllr Kolek: "Fairtrade Town status would be another feather to the town's cap; promoting the values of equality, respectful partnerships, sustainable practice and consumer knowledge."
