An appeal's been launched for unwanted school uniforms and equipment, to help families in East Devon who can't afford to buy them.

Citizens Advice East Devon's Kit 4 Kids project will be collecting the clothing and other items, laundering and repairing them, and giving them out to families in need. The aim is to supply as many families as possible in time for the start of the new term in September.

Head of Insight and Modelling, Jess W, said: "We know from our data how many families are struggling in East Devon and for them, we do what we can. 95 per cent of people accessing foodbanks are destitute, they can't afford new or even second-hand uniforms."

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of families needing support has increased dramatically. Many people have lost their jobs or been working reduced hours, or become unable to work through illness. Relationship breakdowns can also lead to financial difficulties.

Children growing up in households with significant financial worries are at risk of mental health problems as a result of being hungry, cold, and not having access to the same things as friends and peers. They may be bullied for being poor, and this affects their performance and attainment at school. Providing uniforms and school equipment can help children stay engaged in the classroom and support the work of teachers and education professionals.

Anyone with items to donate can hand them in at their local school and Citizens Advice will collect them. Here's a list of the items needed:

• Uniforms

• PE kits

• Shoes

• Bags

• Coats

• Hair clips

• Stationary

• New underwear and socks

• New toiletries

• Club uniforms such as Brownies, Scouts etc

Citizens Advice East Devon is also inviting cash donations.

A new page will be set up on the Citizens Advice East Devon website soon giving details of the scheme, what stock is available, statistics and updates on their progress. Citizens Advice East Devon will continue to share information on their social media channels, and are asking supporters to share the posts to help spread the word about the appeal.

Businesses are also being asked to get in touch if they'd like to help, and their names will be added to the website.
