Editor's letter: Happy New Year to our Honiton readers

2020 has been a shock to the system, in more ways than one. Global pandemics, so we have come to realise, affect pretty much everything.
But through the fear and the confusion and the gut-wrenching losses, we have a newfound respect for our communities.
Here in Honiton, this has certainly been apparent. As the world shut down around us, our community turned inwards and looked after each other in multiple ways and on many fronts – from mental health support to putting food on the table.
Local businesses stepped up to provide for us in our hour of need; neighbours, friends and family members rallied together and groups and networks across the town – new and established – flew into action to ensure no one was left struggling alone.
What we witnessed was an almighty wake-up call, causing us to focus on what matters most. And the evidence remains; there are lot of people in this town putting themselves out on a voluntary basis, largely unrecognised, for the betterment of the community.
I think for most of us 2021 comes as a relief. Through adversity we grow stronger and Honiton has, yet again, demonstrated its strength as a community.
There is a lot to look forward to moving into a fresh calendar year. There is also a lot we still need to address, and the hardship many face must not be undermined.
At the very least, we can take solace in the knowledge that the Honiton community is effective in taking care of it's most vulnerable and isolated members, while providing for families and those seeking a diverse, inclusive and caring place to live.
Here at Honiton Nub News, it is our privilege to provide coverage dedicated to the town. We are excited to enter a new year, with plans to be bigger and better than before.
Your support, as readers and contributors, is what makes it all possible and worthwhile.
