At the last meeting, Honiton Town Council resolved to consider Honiton as a Fairtrade Town. Councillor Caroline Kolek led the motion and is instrumental in ensuring that Honiton qualifies for Fairtrade status.
Cllr Kolek told Nub News: "Making Honiton a Fairtrade Town is important; it shows that we care about decent working conditions, we care about sustainability and care about fair wages and prices for the crops and goods that we buy from developing countries.
"By asking Honiton Town Council to pass a motion that: a) supports Fairtrade Town status b) Agrees the HTC will buy, use and serve Fairtrade tea and coffee we have achieved the first goal in a set of five we that have to complete.
"Our Town Development Manager and EDDC councillor Tony McCullom is currently surveying local businesses and I have met with Geoff Gilbert from East Devon for a Fairer World to plan the setting up a steering group which would oversee our town's status.
"The next step is to contact our local schools asking for their support, educating our young people about food sustainability, fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries is important.
"Our local churches will also be asked to support, which a number already do.
"We are currently in Fairtrade Fortnight with displays, information and activities in the Library and The Co-Op.
"We hope to make much more of Fairtrade Fortnight in Honiton once we have achieved Fairtrade town status.
"I am really excited about this project and delighted with the number of people that have shown an interest in joining the steering group.
"People are becoming more and more interested in where their food and products come from, the impact on the environment and the fair treatment of growers and producers."
