First coronavirus death recorded in East Devon for seven weeks
East Devon has had its first coronavirus related death in seven weeks, according to new figures from the Office of National Statistics.
Two deaths in Devon and Cornwall relating to coronavirus have been recorded in the latest ONS figures.
The latest figures from the ONS, relate to the week of August 8 and August 14, but were registered up to August 22, and show one death of someone from Devon and one in Cornwall where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
It is the first death to have been recorded in Devon for three weeks following two successive weeks without one.
The death in Cornwall which has been registered occurred in a care home, while a resident of East Devon died in a hospital – the first death of someone from East Devon in seven weeks.
As no hospital deaths have been recorded following a positive test in Devon since June 24, it means that the death of the East Devon resident either has yet to be recorded in the NHS England statistics, occurred without them testing positive for coronavirus but it was mentioned on the death certificate, or occurred in a hospital outside of the region.
The figures show in which local authority the deceased's usual place of residence was. For instance, if someone may have died in Derriford Hospital but lived in West Devon, while the death may have been registered in Plymouth, their death would be recorded in the mortality statistics for the ONS figures against West Devon.
The Isles of Scilly has still yet to see a COVID-19 related death and the South Hams and North Devon 12 weeks, Torridge 11 weeks, Torbay ten weeks, Exeter and Teignbridge nine weeks, West Devon five weeks, Mid Devon four weeks, and Plymouth three weeks without a death being recorded.
Previous weeks have seen 1, 0, 1, 1, 2, 5, 1, 7, 10, 11, 15, 38, 44, 69, 84, 107, 89, 60, 16, and nine deaths registered.
In total, 574 deaths from coronavirus have been registered across Devon and Cornwall, with 306 in hospitals, 224 in care homes, 43 at home, and one in a hospice.
Of the deaths, 210 have been registered in Cornwall, 91 in Plymouth, 58 in Torbay, 50 in East Devon, 39 in Exeter, 33 in Teignbridge, 26 in North Devon, 20 in Torridge, 18 in Mid Devon, 17 in West Devon, 12 in the South Hams, and none in the Isles of Scilly.
