Following years of intrigue, The Yellow Deli has officially opened for business as the latest eatery on Honiton high street.

What was previously the Red Cow, a local public house which closed its doors back in 2014, it has spent the past five years being completely transformed through extensive refurbishment.

In the words of Andrew Ensor, one of those involved with the project: "It has been a labour of love."

While it is ostensibly a restaurant - 'it is a restaurant with a difference' - as those at the helm are all connected to the religious community, known as Twelve Tribes, living on Stentwood Farm in Dunkeswell.

The Yellow Deli is an extension of their ethos, which centres on the sharing of common bread - or in other words being at the heart of the community, serving quality food and offering a little place of refuge for their guests.

On entering the building, you are immediately struck by the awe-inspiring interior, which is both rustic and warm. Wood (lots of it reclaimed I'm told) features everywhere from the walls and partitions to the heavily framed pieces of artwork.

A solid, spiral staircase leads to an upstairs area equipped with some additional wood cloaked, diner-style seating, a Mate and Chai bar area and a gorgeous glass-roofed 'orangery' with full length windows that overlook Hembury Fort Hill.

The warmth that seems to radiate from the place is in part due to the yellow 70's theme running through the restaurant. This is a nod to the first restaurant of its kind, The Yellow Deli in Tennessee which was established in 1972.

Since then, members of the community have set up similar style restaurants all over the world; the idea being to support their community by feeding the wider community.

If you wish to check out the restaurant for yourself, they are open everyday 7am-11pm - except Saturday when they are closed all day, Friday (7am-3pm) and Sunday (12-11pm).
