Honiton: A Devon photographer is putting together a special series on 'Joy', and he is looking for people to take part

By Kate Baxter 7th Feb 2022

Amateur photographer Chris (aged 25), who lives in Seaton, takes photos of Devon scenery and its people. He is looking for people to volunteer for a special series he is creating, entitled 'Joy'.

The images which Chris collects will be on his website, with a write up of the project and the people involved.

When Chris isn't out and about capturing photos, he works for an Exeter based charity as a community development officer

Chris spent his early years being home educated on a canal boat in Wiltshire. He went on to university in Cheltenham where he met his partner, Courteney Yeoell.

In 2021 they moved to Seaton together, whilst they both finished their MA in Creative Music Practice.

Chris explained to Nub News how he became involved in photography: "I got into photography after my partner quite unexpectedly bought me a camera for Christmas and I fell in love with it very quickly."

Chris has learnt most of what he knows from watching Youtube videos, but he has recently joined the Colyford and District Photography Club to meet like-minded people.

Chris told Nub News: "It will be a ten-image series of people from different walks of life, focusing on what brings each of them joy in life.

"Since taking up photography about a year ago, I have mostly been shooting without much regard for what the pictures meant, but I wanted to change that.

"Recently, I have been reading about the main causes of people's discontentment, depression and anxiety and ways in which they can begin to be combated.

"Creating this series is a way of combining my interests of photography and (at risk of sounding super grandiose) human experience, while hopefully getting a few people to ask themselves what it is they really love in life."

He continued: "All you need is something that brings you joy and it doesn't need to be fancy. Perhaps you love your reading or your early morning coffee!

"This project is led by people and what brings them joy so nothing is too weird or too normal!"

If you are interested in taking part, please send an email to Chris on: [email protected]
