Honiton Carers Support Group enjoy a visit from the Fire Service

By Guest 17th Sep 2021

Honiton Carers Support Group enjoyed a visit from the Fire Service at their last meeting at Hospiscare King's House on Wednesday August 28.

Ian Johnston from Devon and Somerset Fire Brigade was introduced by Winnie Cameron. Ian gave a very interesting and informative talk on Safety in the Home.

Ian advised everyone that the Fire Service offer a free 'Home Safety Check" individually tailored to each individuals' home.

Everyone present who did not already have an up to date check were asked if they wished to give their details in order to get a free home visit.

The Fire Service can provide free smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and more.

He explained that there are approx 300 fire related deaths a year in domestic premises, which in most instances are related to human behaviour.

Candles being one of the worst causes.

Smoke is one of the worst killers as three to four breaths can render someone unconscious.

The advice is to stay vigilant, watch chip pans, location of toasters, isolate plugs and to keep a phone in your bedroom together with your house keys.

Everyone enjoyed his excellent talk and advice. Winnie thanked Ian on behalf of the Carers for giving his time for an enlightening talk.

The afternoon was finished off with the usual complimentary cakes & hot drinks.
