Popular Honiton fish and chip shop Chippee is reopening two nights a week from Friday (15).

Owners husband and wife Dave and Annie Adams closed the chippy they have owned for 14 years the day Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the UK was to go into lockdown.

Dave told Honiton Nub News: "After careful consideration, we have decided to reopen for two days a week initially on Friday and Saturday.

"It will be collection only, we will not be taking telephone orders.

"We anticipate there may be a fairly long queue outside, but the food will be cooked and ready to take away.

"So it will be a case of come inside, get served and be away again as quickly as possible.

"However, we will be a small team and ask our customers to be patient in our new situation.

"We also want to remind everyone to keep two metres apart when queuing outside the shop and that contactless card payments are preferred."

Dave and Annie will be back behind the counter for the first time since retiring from working in the shop 18 months ago.

They will be joined by their two managers - Steve and Jane - along with team member PJ.

The couple are trialling the Friday and Saturday evening opening before deciding how to move forward.

"We will try a couple of weeks and, depending on how busy and how long lockdown progresses, consider extending to three nights or even back to six."

Dave is keen to get cooking and will be tickling his taste buds with the first food ready on Friday.

"I shall be eating the first meal. I love our fish and chips and can not wait to get them fried up and try them again."

Chippee will be open on Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 9pm, serving a limited menu but including favourites such as cod and sausages.

For customers and staff safety, a 'sneeze screen' has been installed across the counter and serving area and only two customers will be allowed in the shop at one time.

"We are very much looking forward to getting our business back up and running again and welcoming customers old and new," added Dave.
