PHOTOS: Honiton community backs litter picking initiative with gusto
A tentative post on social media – asking if members of the Honiton community would be interested in litter picking – quickly snowballed into a huge response from residents keen to back the initiative.
Peter Coster, an electrical engineer who lives in the town with his wife and seven-year-old son, set up the Honiton Litter Pickers group on Facebook, attracting dozens of active members in less than two weeks.
"I was a bit overwhelmed by the response to be honest – it's been amazing. There are a few matters we need to address, such as insurance and effectively disposing of the waste we collect, but I'm all about finding solutions to problems," Peter said.
In true community spirit, a number of Honiton businesses have already donated generously to the fledgling project.
Trip Community Transport supplied 10 litter picking grabs, A1 Print and Stitch donated 25 hi-vis jackets, Tool Station provided collecting sacks and RKL offered a discount on all materials.
The idea wasn't actually Peter's at all. It came from his young son who was spurred into action after watching a David Attenborough documentary on the problem of plastic pollution.
"We've been out walking a lot during lockdown and have taken to litter picking as a family, but with a group of us operating across the town we should be able to make a real difference," Peter explained.
Honiton Litter Pickers are keen to make contact with local businesses who are interested in sponsoring the group, or donating equipment.
