This month marks ten years since the Honiton Memory Cafe was started. In that time it has provided invaluable support and connection for people and their loved ones living with dementia.
Chairman, Heather Penwarden spoke to Honiton Nub News: "In true Memory Cafe style, a suitably festive party and lovely cake had been in the planning to mark the occasion."
Not to be put off by the Covid-19 lockdown, Memory Cafe Co-ordinator, Min Rennolds and Heather arranged for 88 cream teas to be delivered directly to the homes of all friends and volunteers of the cafe.
"The teas were provided by a local cafe with the cream donated through a local supermarket," Heather continued.
"The drivers were all volunteers and the deliveries also gave the chance for a most welcome face-to-face chat through windows and in gardens in and around Honiton.
"Each delivery was received with a huge smile and photos were taken to be put in an album and shared when everyone can get back together again.
"To add to the occasion Honiton Cubs, who have close links with the cafe, made enough birthday cards for every friend and volunteer.
"Managing lockdown presents particularly challenges for people living with dementia and Honiton Memory Cafe Co-ordinator Min Rennolds and other volunteers keep in weekly touch with everyone by phone.
"There is a chance for a cheery chat and to discuss any particular issues that may be of concern that if need be can be passed on to the Admiral Nurse for Honiton to give some expert advice and support.
"Keeping volunteers engaged and supported is important too and there is a very popular weekly Zoom afternoon tea and chat that volunteers can pop into to share their experiences of lockdown and get some cheer to the day."
Min Rennolds commented: "We did not for one moment think we would be celebrating our 10th Birthday without being able to get together.
"The cream teas though were a huge success and greatly appreciated by all given the amount of cards and phone calls of thanks we have since received."
