A nine-year-old boy found an unexploded grenade from World War 2 in his garden.

George was playing in his garden when he found the unusual device, which was later confirmed to be live.

Sgt Bacon and PC Driver from Honiton Police Station attended the scene. The grenade was safely detonated in a controlled explosion by colleagues from 721 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron, Royal Logistics Corps, based at Tidworth Camp.

It is surprisingly common to find live grenades in Devon and Cornwall because devices frequently wash up on the shorelines or are found stumbled upon when clearing out a loved-ones property.

Two other grenades were found in East Devon this week. In Colyton, the Seaton Neighbourhood Policing Team attended a similar report and the grenade was safely detonated in a field behind the property.

Honiton officers Sgt Bacon and PC Driver also attended an incident in Beer where another grenade was located. Sailors from Bravo Diving Unit One at HM Naval Base Devonport assisted with the disposal.

If you find something like a grenade in your garden or home, clear everyone from the immediate are and call 999 from a safe distance.
