An elderly Honiton resident has been put into temporary housing after a fire broke out at her property in Hornbeam Close this morning (March 15).

Firefighters from Honiton, Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary were tasked to the domestic blaze, which started in the kitchen, at around 11.20am.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "One elderly female occupant was found safe and out of danger.

"The Red Cross Emergency Response Team attended to assist the female with temporary rehousing.

"Crews put the fire out using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet and a thermal imaging camera."

The fire involved the ground floor kitchen, starting in a waste bin under the sink and spreading to the units and appliances.

They added: "The kitchen and ground floor were severely damaged by fire and smoke.

"The fire was caused accidentally."
