A local primary school teacher is gearing up for a tough challenge to raise money for Syrian refugees in Jordan.

26-year-old Samantha Smith, who lives in Honiton and works at Kilmington Primary School, has committed to 'The Ration Challenge'.

Organised through the charity Concern Worldwide, Samantha will eat the same rations as a Syrian refugee living in a camp in Jordan for a week, from 13-19 September.

The ration pack includes 170g of red lentils, 420g of white rice, a tin of sardines, 330ml vegetable oil 85g chick peas and a tin of kidney beans.

Honiton Nub News spoke to Samantha to find out what is motivating her, where to donate and how people can follow her progress on social media.

She told us: "I signed up for the challenge just because I wanted to give something back to the world and this is such an important cause to highlight.

"I was also spurred on by the fact that I'm getting married in October.

"As well as the ration week, I am also walking 163km - which is the length of the Syrian coastline and where many of the refugees will try and flee from.

"We can do this in our own time, so I've been doing some Geocaching around Honiton."
