In Pictures: Bluebells at Blackbury Camp

By Kate Baxter 28th Apr 2022

Local residents, holidaymakers and pets have been enjoying the bluebells at Blackbury Camp, which is currently swathed in a sea of flowers.

Blackbury Camp is located about 15 minutes' drive from Honiton, in Southleigh.

The bluebell season starts towards the end of April and lasts around four weeks. Usually found in woodlands, bluebells are the last flower to bloom before the canopy above them becomes too dense with foliage.

The English Heritage site is an Iron Age hillfort which was built during the 4th century BC.

The area consists of an enclosure which is surrounded by 10ft ramparts, which would have served as defence mechanisms.

Evacuations of the site begun in the 1950s and the finds included an oven, pottery, the remains of a hut, trenches, a cooking pit and a hoard of over 1,000 sling stones.
