Large green space secured for East Devon residents paves way for car free travel from Cranbrook to Exeter
East Devon County Council (EDDC) have acquired a new area of green space for local people to enjoy.
The space will become part of the creation of Clyst Valley Regional Park, which will stretch National Park Killerton to Clyst St Mary, which is near the Exe Estuary.
The space, which is roughly the size of nine rugby pitches, will offer flower meadows, trees and even a stream for locals to enjoy. When the park is completed, residents of Cranbrook won't need to get in a car or a bus to reach Exeter.
Councillor Paul Arnott, East Devon District Council's Leader and Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development, said: "This is one of the best schemes currently being run by East Devon District Council and when it is complete residents will gain quiet, sustainable travel routes from Cranbrook to Exeter without needing to get in a car at all.
"We hope that local residents will appreciate a walk along the meandering stream through the middle of the site or just taking in the expansive new green space."
It is hoped that the park will be open to the public in 2023 and once open it will provide an alternative outdoor space to the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths and the Exe Estuary.
The green space was paid for developers, known as Section 106 Payments and the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) which is part of the developer's obligations when building houses. The purchase fee has not been disclosed.
