Last Friday afternoon, Tesco Honiton donated £150 to the local youth sports group Wado-Kai.

The youth martial arts club, run by local man John Cox, was the first to benefit from a joint enterprise between Tesco Honiton and Honiton Town Council.

The council has accessible funds from local community incentive funds and 106 monies to help develop local groups, green spaces and park areas.

When the council held its public meeting for community sports groups, Duncan Sheridan-Shaw saw this as an opportunity to get the local retailer involved.

Tesco store manager, Ian Carvel, agreed that the store would donate £150 of the takings from the community book sale to the groups that applied to the council for additional support.

John Cox, a regular around town and a loyal Tesco customer was approached by Duncan, as the first to benefit from the Tesco donation.

"We hope that off the back of today's gift, that more local sports groups will contact the council and benefit from the Town Council's funds and the added extra of £150 from the community book sale," Duncan Sheridan-Shaw said.

Town Mayor John Zarchiksky was on hand with fellow councillor Caroline Kolek to support the cheque presentation.

Any groups in the area that wish to know more about the funding should contact Honiton Town Council.
