Trustees for Honiton's Millennium Green have cancelled the official opening of a designated wildlife area, due to coronavirus restrictions.

'Vernon Corner', the name given to the conservation patch, was due to receive an official opening celebration on Saturday, May 9, with around 200 guests and a band playing.

This is no longer possible as the country remains on lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Millennium Garden is a two and a half acre piece of recreational land at the end of The Glen, which was donated to the people of Honiton by a beneficiary.

It is a place of tranquility in the heart of the town where anybody is welcome to come and pass the time surrounded by nature.

Kassa Retter, chair of Honiton Millennium Green committee and a trustee, spoke to Nub News.

She said: "It's a real shame that we have had to cancel the event we had planned, which was to officially open an area of wildlife and wildflowers that has been specially cultivated as part of Vernon Corner.

"Nature, however, doesn't stop growing in a crisis and I want to remind everyone that the Millennium Green is still open if people wish to spend time there as part of their daily exercise during lockdown."
