It's all systems go to get the SYTL team to a national karate tournament in London
The SYTL Karate Club, based at the LED Centre in Honiton, is asking for help in raising the necessary funds to enable their students to represent Devon at a national level in an upcoming tournament.
It is the annual Seiwakai Goju-Ryu International Karate Tournament 2019, which is held in London.
For their debut appearance last year, SYTL Karate came home with more medals than any other club, from any other country, in the novice division.
Since then, they have even had one of their students selected to represent England in international tournaments.
Speaking on behalf of the club, Paul Batters said: "This was only possible through the generous donations from the Southwest community and local businesses, along with the hard work of our students, parents and competitors who managed to raise over £3000 to get us there.
"Our small club from East Devon (only started in 2016) attracts girls, boys, men and women of all ages (4-84) and from all walks of life.
"Since our inception it has helped to change the lives of hundreds of students; including those with ADHD, Autism, Dispraxia, foster children and vulnerable adults, to name but a few.
"Last year's success gained huge media attention, and we were even featured on BBC Spotlight's 6 O'clock news along with numerous other media outlets.
"This year we are aiming to do one better, so our team of students, parents and friends have been busy raising funds through local events such as:
Community displays
Bag packingCake Sales
Garage SalesSponsored fun-runs
School fetes24hr Karatethon
Car washingFace your Fears challenges
Etc... "Which has, so far, managed to raise over £500! "But to help us reach our target of £5000, we need your help. "So please, anything you can spare, no matter how large or small would be greatly appreciated - and maybe we can bring more medals home to the South West from this year's tournament. "As a thank you from us, every person who donates will receive a free taster class at one of our dojos and the person/group who donates the greatest sum will win a whole year's free karate classes at SYTL."
