A fisherman has landed a new Honiton Sea Angling Club record after hooking a supersized skate.
Wayne Hand, who has been a member of the club for three years, battled for 45 minutes to reel in the common skate, caught off the west coast of Scotland.
He said: "It really was an immense struggle to hook, play and land the fish.
"I was absolutely exhausted after the 45-minute battle - literally shaking."
Wayne's record catch came on the second of two long-shore fishing stints.
He hooked the skate with a powerful Tronixpro beach rod with a braid main line, rated at 80lb breaking strain, connected to a 220lb mono leader and using two joey mackerel as bait.
"The fish picked up the bait twice and dropped it before it was third time lucky and I was in battle," added Wayne, who is a level two Angling Trust coach.
The landed fish was carefully measured - the nationally recognised fishing formula to work out its weight - at 79ins long and 65ins across the wings. This put its weight at a whopping 176lbs.
The skate was then released back into the water.
Honiton Sea Angling Club has been running for almost 27 years and this is the first common skate caught by a member in the club's history.
Secretary Mike Spiller said: "The club is very pleased to see Wayne catch this fish, we like to see our members target new fish on a catch-and-release basis.
"And this one sets a new record for the club. It's always good when a plan comes together and a fish of a lifetime is caught."
