Two Fire Engines from Honiton and Ottery St Mary were called to a chemical reaction at the TWM Technology premises on Heathpark Industrial Estate.

The incident took place at approximately 10.30am this morning and involved a chemical reaction between caustic soda and aluminium filings in a large container.

Nub News spoke to a firefighter at the scene, who told us: "It's caustic soda mixed with aluminium filings and basically what it's done is to have a reaction with the oxygen as well, and started heating up and giving off some smoke.

"It's all contained - nothings's leaked anywhere and gone into the environment - just a little bit of steam and smoke being given off.

"What we've done is to fill the containment vessel completely up with water and we're just letting the final reaction take place and dissipate into the atmosphere."

Marketing Manager for TWM Technology, Fiona said: "We had a minor incident today with a chemical reaction, but it was swiftly brought under control by the brilliant Fire Service.

"Everything that's come off is actually water vapour, so there's no chemicals involved and no damage caused to either people or the environment.

"It looks pretty dramatic, but it's actually quite minor - fortunately!"
