Woz On - HRFC reflects on a series of defeats

Decided on your vote yet? I can't wait for all those wonderful handouts with all of those wonderful promises from everyone, we can't lose apparently!
I'm mindful that 10 years ago someone took away all our winter coats and said "you should suffer in silence for the good off the deficit". Then suddenly there's an election and every party has now offered us or is trying to bribe us with a variety of new coats, all with fur lining as well. Fill your boots, no catch you'll all get one!
Anyway, Woz on at the Ton? Well I made the long trip down to watch the Ton play one of the front runners, Kingsbridge, in the league. It was a lovely day, a tad cold but perfect for rugby.
Unfortunately it was a bit of a day to forget and my overall assessment was the opposition were very good on the day.
Everything they did worked, the bounce went their way, they kicked all their goals and any errors we made, seemed to get punished with a score every time they got the ball.
Now for us it was a story of woe as the game went on. We had three injuries in the first 20 minutes which meant the subs bench was empty early on and from that point onwards, with decisions always going against us, this meant we were on the back foot and trying to play catch up rugby.
What was slightly bemusing was, we didn't actually play that badly and I thought it was a better performance than a couple of other games we've played this season.
The score didn't reflect the general run of the game. Obviously we lost heavily, so it would be churlish to mention some poor decisions made by the referee or how unlucky we were. As frankly, a 10-1 try count, is proof that we got stuffed by a lot better mob.
If they field that side at home all the time, they will be hard to beat and we just ran into them when everyone was available and they were on song.
So, wounds licked and a long trip home to contemplate and regroup.
The Otters were at home on Saturday and a big thanks to chairman Nuttall who sorted the grub out for the day and also a big hand to those who came along to support and it's great to see big crowds at 2nd team games, so thanks to you all!
Stopper turned up in his finery as he thought it was the ladies lunch day, unfortunately he was a week early so his disappointment had to be managed carefully.
To the game, they were playing Topsham who for the first time in four years actually turned up, afterwards we wished they hadn't.
Unfortunately it appears they were also "done in" by a very good individual who scored several first half tries for them. It was, as the cliché goes, 'a game of two halves'.
The score was 34-0 in the first half and a "kicking" looked on the cards but Birdy's men rallied and they then went on to score 24 unanswered points but the damage had been done, so they blinking went down as well!
Sunday we had three junior games at home five piles of "you know what" had to be removed from the pitches before the games started and so on it goes. Just doesn't seem right in these times of health and safety gone mad and with all the very strict controls around everything else concerning kids welfare yet with a high risk of them rolling around in dogs mess at Allhallows week in week out, that doesn't actually register on any H&S scale at all. I just don't get it!
Have I said this before? Bleeting on again I know, but nothing has changed in 40 years of questioning how on earth is it acceptable to anyone, dog owner or not!
Sunday was a difficult day for our 14's who narrowly lost their cup match in controversial style down at Newton Abbot.
The home side scored the winning try some eight minutes into extra time when the reality was there wasn't actually eight minutes left.
The sad thing is the ref just didn't appear to be as "neutral" as he should have been and coming from Newton and brazenly running out in his NA kit didn't help with that impression either!
Now, we can complain about this but there will be, denials and counter denials and probably the RFU officials will conclude it's one team's opinion against another's and it would just look like sour grapes and we would lose the argument.
So, as gutting as it is, a phrase I've often used applies in this situation, 'life's a bit like that'.
So advice for the boys is, pick your selves up, dust yourself off and go again next week. It's rugby and whatever the circumstances rugby players should always outwardly be gracious in defeat but at the same time simmer and seethe underneath and go to work on ensuring you score more tries than them next time.
Look at the New Zealand captain's speech after we done 'em in in the world cup. He was full of praise for us, very professional, he then went away, got cross with his squad, they regrouped and came back and walloped the Welsh on their next outing.
Oh! As an aside while having a difficult discussion with the NA junior chair about said issue, I discovered their junior subs are £75 for junior membership and they also have to buy their own shirt, just a thought to ponder.
All of the above sounds a bit negative, so I'll mention some positive things like our 13's who dished out a pasting to their opposition. Hurrah!
Also great to see our newest team, the under 7's, on their fourth outing ever and new manager Meg's comment was to say "rugby days are seen by the kids as the highlight of their week!"
So another Hurrah for that!
Now a notice, we are trying to get our 100 club up and running and we need more of you to join. If you click the red button below you can find out more about it. You can win money whilst helping the clubs finances.
The hire of the club to the training company finished yesterday and they were very pleased with the facility, so a big thanks to Clare for organising it and to all of you who heeded the request to keep it tidy after training nights.
So to Saturday, we have the ladies lunch before the double home game. I'll text Stopper! I seem to remember last year several of the ladies really enjoyed themselves!
Ones are back to a "must win" scenario against fellow strugglers Wiveliscombe. We haven't played this side in years, so all a bit new. Getting back in the saddle is the answer to last week's woes and we go again.
The Otters take on South Molton, again, a tough fixture for them. I am a tad concerned all round given the weather forecast but hey ho, not much we can do about that.
Then on Sunday we have six home games to contend with at Tonsville, weather permitting.
Any help in the kitchen won't go a miss, if you can, it will be busy. We have staggered kick-offs for the 7's, 8's, 9's,10's, 11's, and 12's and they are all playing Chard. The 13's and 14's trot over the border into Somerset to do a raid at their place.
That's about it for this week, keep smiling and your eyes peeled for bargains, sugar daddies, etc.
