Devon's young people have borne the brunt of the unemployment crisis created by the coronavirus pandemic, with the number of jobless 18 to 24 year olds rising steeply in a year.

The problem was discussed by Devon County Council last Thursday, April 29.

Many children in Devon have never been to the seaside, even though they live in a county with some of England's best beaches.

But that could soon change, after Devon County Council voted to explore plans to see how to help youngsters get to the county's coast and moorlands.

Honiton residents will soon be able to get advice on debt, benefits, housing and a host of other issues via a live video chat with a Citizens Advice adviser.

Citizens Advice East Devon is installing video booths in food banks, job clubs and community centres across the district.

Back in November, Honiton resident Hollie Broom commented on a post promoting local high street shops and was randomly selected to win the prize, which she can finally spend now the shops are open.

Gymnastics sessions have now been running again for two weeks at Honiton Gymnastics Club, and the club's gymnasts are so thrilled to be back that they have released an "It's great to be back at gymnastics" video.

Exeter Chiefs centre Ollie Devoto paid a special visit to Peter Betteridge bed store in Honiton this week, in partnership with sleep and wellbeing brand Mammoth.

Following the store re-opening earlier this month, professional rugby player Ollie was there to unveil the newly designed Mammoth studio in a socially distanced visit to highlight the importance of sleep for both mental and physical wellbeing.

People enjoying a drink in pubs near water are being urged to take extra care and look out for their friends, in a campaign by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

In the last five years, fire crews have attended 360 water rescue incidents in the two counties.

The next phase of the Covid vaccination programme is under way in Devon, covering people aged 18 to 49.

But some of the GP practices that have so far been administering the jabs will not be involved in giving them to this age group – including the Honiton Surgery.
