Woz On - Away games at the seaside this weekend for the Tonites

As many of you know, we kicked of the new season last Saturday with a couple of home games.

The Firsts entered into uncharted waters with their first outing in the Western counties league with a visit from "promotion hopefuls" St Austell.

The Seconds had a hastily rearranged friendly against higher-league side Cullompton, which was a bit of a warm up game before their first difficult fixture away to Exmouth this Saturday.

I'm pleased to report there was a lot of support for both games which is great, unfortunately we came away empty handed - but both sides gave good accounts of themselves, which was all very positive.

The Firsts got to half time 9-6 up and for the faithful Tonites with the slope in our favour the feeling was that they were "doable".

However a flurry of injuries and a relentless attack from the visitors saw the Ton starved of the ball and St Austell got on top.

Still, it was a very close game and bar a last second score, the Ton would have come away with a losing bonus point.

So, whilst disappointed, what it did show was they are far from out of their depth and there's much to build on and they now have a clear idea of what is required to survive in the league.

For the Seconds, again, it was strong opposition and they only went down by one score. The talking point of this game was the issue with the ref who and I hate to criticise but she really didn't understand the rules and was way out of her depth.

Now, we did establish that this was her first senior game, so allowances must be made but frankly this did spoil the game and several tries were clearly not tries.

Credit to both sets of players who, had they not been so understanding, there could have been problems. Still everyone starts somewhere, but as I said afterwards perhaps just not here.

Polite feedback was given to the assessor, who I'm sure would have been gentle but perhaps more "schooling" is needed before being let out again - sorry if that sounds a bit harsh.

There was a full club house after the games and big thanks to Ally and Bug*eroff for doing the food and to Clare and her bar crew, which made it a pleasant evening.

On Sunday, our under 14s had a great game against a much larger team from Newton Abbot. I'm please to say we scored late on to pull off a great victory and not leave the club empty handed after the weekend.

Usually I have a comment on the old national issues, but I still have my self-imposed ban on discussing politics - so don't ask me about it.

Dearest and nearest are trying to ban me from listening to the news anymore.

Cricket didn't go well and that last gasp victory a few weeks back just papered over cracks. Fact is, they're a bit better than us - or more accurately, Smith is.

We got a win in the footy which is good and as we should have. We beat the Italians last Friday in the rugby, but it was all a bit dull in my opinion.

At Ton central Gordon and Stopper have beavered away this week fixed the gate, guttering and put up cellar shelves so tickety-boo.

There's nothing on at home this weekend, so if you want your local Ton rugby fix it's off to the seaside!

The Ones are at Teignmouth and for the Twos, it's a trip down to Exmouth both games kick off at 3pm.

That's about it for this week.
