Woz On - England playing South Africa in the Rugby World Cup Final

By Guest 17th Sep 2021

Last Saturday, we at the Ton had some mixed fortunes.

Firstly I imagine most of you, like me, watched England dismantle the All Blacks.

What a performance it was!

I was up and down like a yo-yo. It was a nervous watch for sure and even when there was no chance they could come back, the last few minutes seemed like an age before the whistle went.

In the final - how about that!

I suggested last week that it would be great if the Welsh had also got there as well but on reflection, I'm sort of glad they didn't.

I'm sure we would have beaten them, but can you imagine how it would have been for the next four years, if they had somehow won.

We'd never have heard the end of it. Anyway, looking forward to tomorrow.

I can remember watching the last final at the club in 2003, it was a great atmosphere last time.

So, to you all "come on down" as they say.

Bacon n sausage sarnies on offer and liquid refreshments - you decide if that includes beer! The more the merrier, we open at 8!

I mentioned mixed fortunes on Saturday, as we then had the much anticipated local derby against Cullompton.

The Cully officials invited us for a pre-lunch buffet, so I picked up Stopper and Gordon and headed on over.

They have a pretty good set up and the pitch looked perfect. It was great to renew old acquaintances and there was a large crowd and a great atmosphere.

Unfortunately we had a disaster of a day on the field and I don't think I've seen us play so badly for a long while. We just didn't look like we were at the races at all and we came a poor second.

It was disappointing for sure and life in the league is getting tougher by the week. Still, there is a long way to go and we can bounce back, we have a week off this weekend, so it's a time to regroup and re-attach the wheels.

Things can only get better.

I met up with my chum Paula at Cully as she now lives there. As many of you know Paula is still doing our Junior fixtures as a favour to us as we try to find a new junior fixtures secretary.

Time is running out and we are desperate to find someone to take over her role. Unfortunately if we don't get a replacement we won't have any junior fixtures for next year.

Sorry if this is a bit of a moan, but we need to find someone to step up and do it.

Let me know if you can help out and take up the mantle, we can fill you in on the role and Paula is happy to mentor you through it.

Now to cheer you up, a funny thing happened after the game at Cully. Jane my wife got a lift over with Emma and the new Rice clan.

She obviously came back with me but we both completely forgot that I'd taken Stopper and Gordon over to watch, and I left without them!

I think this is clearly an early sign of dementia. It never even crossed my mind until an irate President phoned me as I arrived back home.

Luckily Brenda Selway was on hand to bail me out and bring them back! Stopper was well chuffed.

The Otters had a great win at home against Exeter Athletic, which put some cheer back in the camp and there was a good social at the club afterwards.

Big thanks to Clare and the bar crew who looked after things and they also helped serve up the food for the seconds as well so big thanks all round.

Despite the weather, the junior games went ahead on Sunday and we had a full programme against Topsham home and away.

This Sunday, weather permitting we have the 7's and 8's who kick off against Paignton at 10.30am at Allhallows and the 11's and 13's kick off after that, also against Paignton.

The 9's and 10's go down to Paignton for their games.

That's about it for this week.

So again, reminder about tomorrow - it would be great to have a full house at the club!

No 'jarmy' watching tomorrow; up you get, bacon sarnie and a pint - see you there!
