Over the last decade, major nationwide choirs such as the 'Military Wives' and the 'Rock Choir" have seen a phenomenal rise in fame and popularity in the UK and beyond.
This has made it easy to overlook the many skilful independent choirs in more rural areas of the UK that continue to delight local audiences, bring communities together and play a vital part in sustaining the social and mental wellbeing of its members.
One such hidden musical gems is Honiton's very own Sweet Honi Choir, which was founded in 2011 and consists of more than forty core members from across East Devon.
Since 2019, Sweet Honi Choir has been led by the charismatic Dan Nicholls, who teaches music at Honiton Primary School and is an accomplished musician and songwriter in his own right. Under his leadership, Sweet Honi Choir has gone from strength to strength. It now has a permanent Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass section, and is accompanied by its own live band. Last year, a special benefit concert by Sweet Honi Choir at The Beehive in Honiton raised £1,351.50 for the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine appeal.
"Having this choir in Honiton is amazing, it gives so much joy and sense of togetherness. It gives vibrance to the community and a positive uplift to the culture of Honiton." Geraldine
"2 hours of singing and laughing with Dan & the Sweet Honi choir should be on prescription. Can't recommend it enough!" Kay
Martin Staniford from Awliscombe, who has been with Sweet Honi Choir since its inception, says: "Dan is our 3rd choir leader and he's taken Sweet Honi in a new direction with new songs, keeping the experience fresh, and the development of an in-house band."
Forever looking for new opportunities to spread the joy that singing brings, Sweet Honi Choir is returning to the Beehive for one night only this May with a unique triple bill with Sidmouth Gospel Choir and the brand new Devon based Pop-Up Youth Choir.
On the night, Sweet Honi Choir will entertain audiences with more than a dozen brilliant new arrangements of familiar classics by artists ranging from the Everly Brothers and Fleetwood Mac to Adele and Lady Gaga. There may be a surprise or two in store and WARNING, audiences are likely to feel compelled to join in…
Tickets for this unique triple bill are now on sale at the Beehive.
