Volunteers from the Honiton Carers were in the Co-op on Friday raising awareness of their charity work and encouraging shoppers to support them.

Honiton Carers is a support group run by Winnie Cameron. Regular days out, art sessions and Coffee and Cake meet-ups are organised to provide support and companionship to unpaid carers.

The group is one of three local causes chosen to receive support from Co-op's Local Community Fund - the others are Foodsave and Honiton Football and Rugby Club. It is the third year that Honiton Carers has been chosen as a Co-op local cause.

Last year the Co-op presented Honiton Carers for a cheque worth £2079.17 and the total donated by the supermarket to last year's causes was close to £6,000.

Winnie Cameron told Nub News: "Honiton Carers really appreciate being one of Honiton Co-op chosen causes of the year.

"On Friday we sold a good number of both Rotary Raffle tickets and Honiton and District Lions Club Easter Egg squares, and we will be drawing the winner of the Easter Egg on Wednesday at Combe.

"We also sold some lovely Art and Craft gifts made for us by our unpaid carers.

"We had lots of lovely conversation with the community and signed up a couple of new unpaid carers, others took away leaflets for future information and for friends. It is all about bringing awareness to the community and enticing them to choose our cause as their chosen cause for the year.

"We help the customer to choose their chosen cause of the year and even though we obviously encourage them to choose Honiton Carers, we do tell them about the other two causes as well, making sure they make a well informed choice.

"A lot of the customers do not realise they can choose every year but presume it rolls on from year to year. Even if a cause is lucky enough to have been chosen two continuous years, Co-op members need to re-choose for the support to continue."

If you are a Co-op member, 2p of every £1 you spend in store goes to your chosen Co-op local cause. You can join the Co-op here
