Community kitchen sets up in wake of Covid-19 crisis

In the midst of a crisis it is amazing to see communities come together.

When Cathy McCollum of Cathy's Bakehouse found herself with no work - creating bespoke cakes for special occasions - she took action in the way she knows how.

"Cooking is something I can do and with all the cafés and kitchens closing I realised there was a potential for a lot of wasted food, which I've always hated," Cathy told Nub News.

Inspired by the thought of lots of low-income families suddenly having to find extra meals and vulnerable people self isolating, Cathy made contact with local restaurants and cafés, shutting in respect of Covid-19 guidelines, and asked for donations.

Honiton businesses did not fail. The Kitchen of Combe Garden Centre, Tesco Honiton, The Star Inn Wetherspoons, Fishmongers Honiton all donated lots of produce, with Cool Heat offering up a refrigerated trailer for safe storage.

Cathy is currently utilising the facilities at Honiton Rugby Club, making use of her own professional kitchen appliances, to cook meals which will be frozen and handed out to those who need it.

SHE NEEDS YOUR HELP. Cathy is asking anyone for small, freezable containers in which to keep the meal portions.

ALSO produce such as cheese and butter is greatly needed, plus chicken - currently a surplus of vegetable soup being made, although all food (within reason) is welcome.

This is a voluntary effort - operating under a newly thought-up name 'The Random Meal Hunters' - which could be a lifeline for certain members of the community, both young and old.

Cathy added: "Basically what we're asking is that if you've got it and don't need it - donate it to us at the rugby club."

If you have useful items to donate then head down to the rugby club on Allhallows Playing field, where Cathy will be stationed until 5pm, or contact her on 07436537070.
