An old Honiton Town Borough Sign, which came up for auction at Chilcotts recently, will now feature as part of the town's history on display in Allhallows Museum.

The striking piece has been in the spotlight recently, after a social media post from the auction house speculated as to the significance of the town's crest.

This got residents commenting, with local curator, Margaret Lewis, stating the biblical reference, widely accepted as the most accurate interpretation.

Chair of a new community movement, Honiton Forward, Duncan Sheridan-Shaw was quick to act in the interest of the town and instigated a quick, effective campaign to restore the sign to Allhallows Museum.

In fact, at auction the sign fetched a far greater sum than had been estimated and outbid the community effort.

"So the Honiton town sign that we hoped to buy for the Allhallows Museum was sold for £720 - Honiton Forward was outbid but we understand the sign will still be given to the museum, but that has yet to be confirmed," a spokesperson said.

"All in all, it great to see so much support for Honiton, the museum and local charities and businesses, which is the core intention of Honiton Forward."

The happy ending everyone was rooting for was realised when the couple who purchased the sign officially donated the piece for all to see in Allhallows Museum.

The museum posted: "Grateful thanks go to Mr and Mrs Stephen Turner who have donated this Honiton road sign to Allhallows Museum in memory of his father William Frank Turner."

Honiton Nub News has also spoken to Stephen Turner, who lived and worked in Honiton until the age of 22. He wishes to tell his Honiton story - with references to names and places of old - and explain the personal significance of the sign and where it now belongs.
