VIDEO: Honiton LED fitness instructor takes to the great outdoors

By Hannah Corfield 17th Sep 2021

A fitness instructor and personal trainer (PT) who has worked at LED Honiton Leisure Centre for almost 20 years has adopted a more natural setting.

For Sarah Palfrey, who lives in Payhembury, lockdown abruptly shutdown the entire industry she works for, so it was a case of think on one's feet - and quickly.

After initially conducting PT sessions online and with the continuing easing of lockdown, the idea of outdoor gym sessions arose - with Sarah fortunate to have a friend with a field she could use.

And so 'Field Fit' was born. Located just outside the village of Payhembury; the set-up reflects its rural setting with tractor tyres, buckets and logs as apparatus.

As Sarah explained to Honiton Nub News: "With Covid coming in and the gyms closing, I had to look at different ways of doing things.

"I have a large network of personal training clients, so started off doing Zoom sessions, which worked quite well. Then, as soon as it was safe I began holding sessions outside. The weather has been absolutely amazing for it.

"I'm lucky to have a very lovely friend who has a field I can use. So I started bringing people here for circuit classes, with everyone on individual stations - hence why each session is limited to 10 people.

"People love working out outside. I've tried to keep it feeling rustic and rural; consequently we've got bags of compost and old car tyres - but it works every single part of you.

"It's cardio workout, whilst working all of your muscle groups and you have fun as well.

"It's a laugh and completely inclusive. People work to their own ability and enjoy the added benefits of being surrounded by nature."

Each station is completely self contained for the user and everything is sanitised prior to sessions.

Sarah added: "Every effort is made to ensure people feel safe. At the moment being outside is wonderful, but I am looking at ways I might continue through the winter."

Field Fit runs on Monday at 11am, Wednesday at 5pm and 6.10pm and Friday at 5pm - with other classes, including yoga, available. Sessions cost just £5.
