The Honiton shop and tea room inspired by the seasons

By Hannah Corfield 17th Sep 2021

A gift shop and tea room nestled on the corner of Dolphin Court - once a prestigious hotel - offers a delightful treat for visitors to Honiton High Street.

The Little Shop of Seasons, with a newly refurbished café space out the back, is transformed every few months to reflect the time of year and key events, such as Christmas and Halloween.

The quirky idea to rotate stock and the displays depending on the season came from Emily King, one member of the family-run operation that is The Little Shop of Seasons.

Honiton Nub News spoke to Emily, and her mum Angela Kirby, who told us: "By mid-october we are a full-blown Christmas shop and then we change with each season.

"Spring is quite floral, with an Easter infusion, summer has a nautical theme, then it's autumnal colours and pumpkins before we hit Christmas again.

"As a family, we've always celebrated the seasons and decorated the house accordingly.

"When the kids were little, we would go out and collect cones and things we could hang on our little seasonal tree that would sit in the hallway all year round.

"When Emily left for university, she came up with the idea for a shop inspired by our little seasonal tree.

"She said 'mum can you give up work and come and do it with me' and that's how it all started."

A retail premises at the top of town was the first place they occupied, before outgrowing that and moving into Dolphin Court two and a half years ago.

"The reason we moved here was to have the tea room, because we wanted to offer homemade cakes and sweet treats to accompany the theme.

"You'll see in there now, all the cakes are pink and summery - with mermaids and gin and tonic."

Angela added: "In fact, as a 14-year-old, my very first job was waitressing here back when it was the Dolphin Hotel and this was the restaurant."
