Parts of the M5 are closed this afternoon (Sunday 21 August) after a large heavy goods vehicle caught fire.

At the time of writing (16:30) the north-bound M5 remained closed but two of the three southbound lanes were open.

About an hour ago, Inrix reported:"M5 in both directions closed, stationary traffic due to lorry fire at J30 A376 Sidmouth Road (Exeter / Service Areas). Congestion to J31 (A30 interchange) Northbound and J29 (Honiton turn off) Southbound.

"Cameras show a large plume of smoke just South of J30. Northbound is totally stopped and is likely going to need repairs to the surface.

"Diversion - Just Southbound is able to come off, go around the roundabout and then get back on."

The Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing Team Tweeted: "M5N completely shut at Jnc 30 Exeter due a lorry fire! M5S shut at Jnc 30 but traffic able to rejoin. Expect delays!! Thank you for your patience!"

There are long delays in both directions on the M5. Devon County Council have also issued an alert to expect queues.

A diversion rote has been established:

Drivers are asked to follow the Hollow Diamond diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the A38 onto the A379 northbound.
  • Continue north on the A379 straight across 3 roundabouts
  • Re-join the M5 at J30.
