Dramatic scenes as Honiton Fire Service attend lorry fire in Ottery

By Kate Baxter 26th Jul 2023

Members of Honiton Fire Service attended a lorry fire in Ottery St. Mary yesterday (26 July) which saw a major route through the down closed for most of the day.

The incident began at 8.23am when Ottery St Mary fire station and Middlemore station were alerted to a lorry on fire on Barrack Road.

A road traffic accident had occurred which caused a 'well developed' fire in a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).

The driver of the vehicle had managed to exit the vehicle safely.

The attending crews attempted to put the fire out, but additional support was called just before 9am.

Members of Honiton Fire Station and Danes Castle fire stations assisted in putting the fire out.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 3pm.

A statement from the Ottery Fire Station said: "We'd like to thank everyone for their patience while we dealt with this incident with the road being closed most of the day.

"Also a big thank you to Sainsbury's who provided a very generous lunch to the crews with pizzas, garlic bread, and cans of coke.

"Thank you also to Scott Cheadle who captured some excellent images of the incident which gives some insight into how incidents of this type are dealt with.

"Finally we would like to thank the local businesses who allow our crew to respond from their workplaces to keep the local community and wider community safe. Without their support we would not be able to have a quick and safe response."
