The Met Office have issued an Amber Weather Warning for much of the UK, including Honiton, for Sunday.

After a week of high temperatures, the hot spell will continue this week and is likely to peak on Sunday, which could be hottest day of the year so far. The Met Office is expecting 'exceptionally high temperatures' which could have widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

The government office has warned that all groups are likely to be affected by the extreme weather - not just the venerable. People ought to change their routines or working practices to avoid the heat.

The roads in Devon are likely to be congested as more people visit coastal areas. An increased number of people swimming in the sea, lakes and rivers will lead to heightened risk of water safety incidents

Delays on roads and road closures are to be expected, and there may also be delays and cancellations to rail and air travel. There will be significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays.

How do I keep safe?

·      Stay out of the heat, especially during the hottest time of the day (usually midday)

·      Keep children out of the sun

·      Avoid travel – but if it is essential stay hydrated and carry water with you

·      Wear sunscreen and stay in the shade

·      Be prepared for delays to your journey

·      Keep in contact with others to check they are okay, especially the elderly.

·      Don't walk your dog during hot weather, unless it is very early in the morning or well into the evening
