A new venture to provide a regular support group for mums who are nursing held its pre-launch today as part of World Breastfeeding Week 2019.
The event took place at the Children's Centre next to Littletown Primary Academy on Honiton Bottom road, which is where the Honiton Baby Café is to be held on a weekly basis.
The group will meet on Mondays from 10 – 11.30am once they officially launch on September 16, with sessions also running throughout the school holidays.
Since 2016, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) has organised a week, from August 1 – 7, which is dedicated to the promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide.
The Honiton Baby Café pre-launch is part of an international campaign to generate awareness around breastfeeding and offer reassurance to mums with babies.
The event coincides with Devon County Council conducting a social media takeover tomorrow for World Breastfeeding Week, so images from the launch will be shared as part of that. Even BBC Spotlight were in attendance today, which shows what a great success the baby café is already proving to be.
The project was put into motion by Lauren Costello-Fox, Gabrielle Mitchell and Clare Chapman who saw a need for a breastfeeding support group in Honiton.
They then applied for the Dragons' Den event organised by East Devon District Council on May 29. The money they secured as successful candidates is going towards training and buying slings.
Lauren Costello-Fox said: "The reception has been amazing, we've had loads of shares on social media and lots of people asking questions such as 'can they come if they're bottle feeding' – yes, 'can they come if they're pregnant' – yes.
"We're using today as a way to gauge what people want and then we can see how things evolve. There's definitely a need for new mums support and everything that comes with it, so hopefully that's what we can provide.
"While there are plenty of really good baby and toddler groups - there isn't anything with a focus on breastfeeding support. We're reaching out to mums not only in Honiton, but in the surrounding villages as well."
Honiton Baby Café are still looking for volunteers to get involved, so if you have experience breastfeeding and would like to take part in the breastfeeding peer support training, click the red button below and get in touch.
