The benefits of robot pets are being highlighted by Honiton Carers Support Group, which wants to raise awareness of their availability to people living with dementia in Devon.
Several studies have shown that the robot pets give great comfort to elderly people with the condition, as well as those who feel lonely and isolated in care homes that can't allow real cats and dogs inside.
The pets have electric sensors on their bodies, meaning they respond to touch, and can make barking, meowing and purring noises like real animals.
Exeter University is currently involved in a study which is seeing hundreds of robotic pets given to care homes throughout the UK.
The university's research found the pets improve the health and wellbeing of people in care homes, as well as increasing their social interaction with other residents, family members and staff.
They may trigger memories of past animal companions, and often act as a stimulus for conversation.
Winnie Cameron of Honiton Carers Support Group said: "Devon Carers have a few of these available to carers for loved ones living with dementia - officially on loan, but they will never have to be handed back. You can apply for one directly to Devon Carers."
