Firefighters from Honiton were sent to help put out a fire in a large barn last night.

The fire at a farm in Newton St Cyres was initially attended by two fire crews from Crediton but it soon became clear that more help was needed.

Firefighters from Honiton, Bovey Tracey, Exeter and Chagford were called in to help.

The barn, which was full of hay, was well alight when firefighters arrived following a call from a farmer at around 8.15pm.

As well as attempting to put out the fire, firefighters worked with the farmer to rescue approximately 100 calves from a nearby shed which was at risk of catching alight.

Firefighters had to use various equipment to tackle the fire and empty the barn of hay.

Crews were 'able to save the barn but not its contents', with firefighters spending most of their time removing hay and allowing it to burn out in an open field.

Firefighters are still on the scene this morning damping down the area to prevent any further flare ups.
