Honiton LED Leisure Centre to offer subsidised swimming lessons so 'everyone can enjoy being in the water'
From next month, Honiton LED Leisure Centre will be offering subsidised swimming lessons in their pool.
It comes after a swimming teacher from Honiton Leisure noticed that there were teenagers on the beach unable to go into the sea because they couldn't swim or they lacked confidence.
The classes will be offered to pupils from Honiton Community College and will take place straight after school finishes at 3.15pm. The first session will be on Wednesday 15 September.
Initially the classes will be offered to pupils in Year 8, 9 and 10, but Honiton Leisure Centre will consider offering the sessions to more year groups in the future.
The classes will cost £1.50 per lesson, which is a much-reduced rate.
Katy Yardley is the Aquatic Lead at Honiton Leisure Centre. She told Nub News: "The sessions are aimed for secondary school students at Honiton Community college (Year 8-10s) that cannot swim or are not confident swimmers.
"It came about after one of the swim teachers for Honiton noticed teenagers on the beach unable to join in with their peers in the water due to fear of the water and inability to swim.
"LED would like to offer all young people the chance to learn to swim, given our coastal surroundings. We believe everyone should be able to benefit from being in and enjoying the water both physically and mentally."
