Honiton man arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer

A man from the Honiton area has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and being drunk and disorderly.

Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for witnesses after an officer was assaulted in Exeter early this morning (Tuesday 25 October).

A male Police Sergeant was conducting routine enquiries on Bartholomew Terrace (which is near to the Catacombs area of the city) between midnight and 12.10am.

The officer was assaulted and sustained choking and punch injuries. He was taken to hospital for a check, and has since been discharged. He is now recovering at home.

The police have thanked two members of the public who intervened and came to the aid of the officer.

A man has been arrested for assault and for being drunk and disorderly. He is in his 40s and is from the Honiton area. The suspect remains in police custody whilst enquiries continue.
